2017 New Floor Finish

Presenting the before, during, and after.

The Before:

My cousin, Terry, was a very messy person and the way he kept his room was awful.  Cig Ashes on the floor, dirt, and mess.  Looking at the floor, it was very dark and I thought it was ruin and not repairable.

Looking at the window area, all trash and very sadden by the look of this.  What person actually lives this way?  Zero respect onto others especially his own family.

More mess, UGH!

The funny part is, he just redone the floor and did it all backwards.  He did it in sections and used a brush to apply the stain without doing the proper method.   Then made one mess on top of another.  Well, enough of the pics of what it was.  Now it is time for floor repair and refinish the right way.

After Sanding and floor filling.  Phase 1 and 2 using 60 Grit paper, sander and detail sander.  For the harder areas, using

After sanding the repairs and buffing the floor:

Next phase, vacuum all areas of the floor for the final cleanup.  Then wash all walls, windows, ceiling, and any other areas that got the sawdust on.  Then you are ready for the next step.  Taking Mineral Spirits, pour a bit into a bucket and use a rag to apply it to the floor.  Do in strips from one side of the room in the grain of the wood and work yourself to the door.  After you are done, floor looks like this:

Now the floor is perfectly clean and sawdust free.  Also, mineral spirits is perfect for nurturing the wood and protects it from heavy traffic and for longer activity.

After letting it dry for an hour, now it is time to apply the stain.  I used pecan stain and the procedure is to wipe on and wipe off.  No use of brushes, it is simple.  Again like mineral spirits, you start from one end going to the other end and move in the grain of the wood.  Do a small 5 or 6 strips at once, going in the same direction across the floor and overlap of what is completed.  Wipe on a section, and then after you complete a section, wipe off again overlapping and then you are ready for another section.  Repeat all the way across the room to the door.  No spills nor splashes.  Never use a brush on this method.  Less bubbles, less streaks, and less blotches.

Allow this to set for the rest of the day for it to dry and work into the floor.  Next is the Polyurethane.

Time to Polyurethane the floor.
First Coat

Making sure I overlap and use an applicator to move slow, overlap on the edges and sweep upward.
2nd Coat

This part is tricky so I had to pay close attention to the floor and make sure I overlap to get no edges and look at the detail shine it is doing.

The final 3rd coat.

Look at how detail and distinct the shine is on the floor.  You can make out the trees and other objects in the shine of the floor.  I love it!

Front Yard 2017

Yes, you see right, palm trees in Wisconsin. There is a trick to have a palm tree grown in Central Wisconsin, you grow them in pots and bring them in when it is Fall and then bring them back outside in the Spring.

Tulips along the side of the house.
